On February 22 at 7:00 P.M., Steuben Church will gather for its Ash Wednesday service. The service will begin our observance of Lent, a time of personal reflection as together we move toward Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

Please join us for worship on Sunday at 10:00 A.M. where you will receive an extravagant welcome. Casual clothing is the norm. Convenient, plentiful parking is available on the square. A ramp makes our sanctuary accessible to those with physical handicaps and limitations. Our Bible-based worship is invitational. It invites people into a place where they can encounter God. The Lord's Table is open to all believers. "So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are also citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God..." (Ephesians 2:19)

Who are we? We are a faith community of God's people. We were organized in 1822 by pioneer missionaries from Connecticut. For over 187 years, we have gathered to worship the Triune God...our Creator, our Savior, and our Sustainer...Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We endeavor to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. Missions - both local and global - are a vital part of our life together.

What do we believe? With the Church Universal, we proclaim, "Jesus Christ is Lord." We search diligently the Old and New Testaments for the Word of God because there is yet more light and truth to break forth from God's Holy Word. We celebrate two Sacraments: Baptism and the Lord's Supper. We uphold the priesthood of all believers: all Christians are called by God to minister to others. God calls us to live with all people everywhere as our neighbors. In essentials unity, in nonessentials diversity, in all things charity.

Who is our pastor? The Rev. Patricia E. Welch was called in 2003 as pastor and teacher at Steuben Church. Born in Angola in western Africa to missionary parents, she is a graduate of Andover-Newton Theological Seminary. Over the years, God has called Patti to serve churches in New York, South Dakota, Kansas, Tennessee, Wyoming, Maine, and Ohio. In 2009, she celebrated the 30th anniversary of her ordination. Patti lives with her husband in Shelby, where she volunteers with Shelby Help Line Ministries.

“Praise the Lord!” begins a psalm which is an acrostic poem, “A-to-Z celebration of God’s works” (Christine Roy Yoder on Psalm 111). God has given us life and love. How will I praise God today for these gifts?

Praise the Lord!
Remember the moments of God’s love
Alone in prayer
In the company of others
Speak a word about God’s love
Even in times of pain

The love of God
Heals our souls
Embraces us

Look with wonder at God’s creations
Open to discovering God’s presence
Remember God’s breath within us
Deep and wide is God’s love.

Carol George Graduates Lay School of Religion

Congratulations to Carol George! She recently completed her studies in the Lay School of Religion (LSR). Its course of study consists of eight semester-long classes over a four-year period. The Northwest Ohio Association of the United Church of Christ sponsors the LSR.

Carol's studies included Pastoral Care, Evangelism & Stewardship; Christian Education; Polity; Liturgy & Worship; Theology; Old Testament; New Testament; and Preaching. Hallmarks of the LSR include quality instruction, Christian fellowship, theological integrity, commitment to the United Church of Christ, and open dialog.

Carol, who is Steuben Church's faithful pianist, hopes to pursue recognition as a Licensed Minister within the UCC.

Food Bank Sunday

The first Sunday of each month is Food Bank Sunday at Steuben Church. Worshipers are asked bring nonperishable food items, personal hygiene products, and paper and cleaning supplies. After church, we bag everything and take it to the Plymouth-Shiloh Food Pantry, which is housed in the former Shiloh Elementary School. This vital local ministry serves countless persons throughout southern Huron and northern Richland Counties. Thanks so much for your generosity over the years!

Polly Adams, who delivers our gifts to Shiloh, reports that the pantry is now accepting gently-used clothing. You may bring clothing to church on Food Bank Sunday, too.
